Individual Reflection: Eldrick Sim

Pre-camp:
o   What sounds interesting about this project?

I have always kind of liked tea to accompany me at late nights due to its fragrance and taste but never thought that it had caffeine.
o   What do you think you can learn from this project?
I think that I would be able to learn about how angles would affect the speed/velocity of the ball and how complicated extraction of such an easy thing like caffeine will be.
o   Any immediate questions regarding the project?

First Day:
-        What did you do today?

We had an awesome time going through different procedures just to extract caffeine from teabags of different sources.
-        What did you learn today?

We learnt different types of extractions that we may have never heard of, for example, solvent extraction and rotary evaporation.
-        How do you feel about today’s activities?
o   Describe how the project has affected your understanding of the discipline and how it may be applied elsewhere

o   Share your insights for the day
I feel that today is a fruitful and enjoyable day. I learned a lot of new and cool things that I did not even know about before. It was not as boring as I may have expected.

Second Day:
-        What did you do today?
o   Briefly describe your day’s activities
We continued on with our Fastest Ball Competition that we briefly started on yesterday. We had a few different competition asking us to meet the specific timing that the Prof. gave. It was tough at first but we managed to not fall behind at the end.
-        What did you learn today?
o   Discuss any learning points from today’s activities
I learnt that teamwork is a very valuable resource, everyone in the group had different opinions on the angle for the slope. In the end came up to a conclusion of working together and trying out all the angles we had in mind.
-        How do you feel about today’s activities?
o   Describe how the project has affected your understanding of the discipline and how it may be applied elsewhere
o   Share your insights for the day
Today was kind of more intense as we had to ingest more information that the other activity. There was way more complicated stuff that we did not know in the first place but managed to understand better in the end.
-        What new questions do you have regarding the discipline?
Is there any other methods of extracting caffeine from teabags?

Third Day:
-        Plenary Sessions
o   Note down at least three key learning points
-        How do you feel about the SST-NTU Flagship programme?
o   Describe how the programme has affected your understanding of the discipline on a larger scale
o   Share your insights for the programme in general
